2 men robbing Japanese restaurant go viral online
MANILA, Philippines — Police are looking into the motive of two robbers who returned the cell phones that they had stolen from diners in a Japanese restaurant in Makati on Sunday.
Closed-circuit television footage of the robbery at Izakaya Kojiro along Antonio Arnaiz Avenue went viral on social media, initially causing alarm.
The footage showed two suspects – one wearing a black jacket and the other a shirt bearing the logo of the ride-hailing app Joyride – pointing a gun at about 10 customers and taking their mobile phones.
Other valuables such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton bags as well as a high-end watch were left untouched.
Makati police chief Col. Jean dela Torre found it strange that the suspects, both still at large, returned the phones.
“In a normal robbery, the suspects would get every valuable given the chance. So it is not common,” Dela Torre told reporters.
Police said the only item taken by the suspects was a wallet containing P25,000 cash from a Japanese, who filed an affidavit of desistance as she returned to Japan yesterday.
