Bulusan erupts anew

MANILA, Philippines — State volcanologists reported a second eruption of Bulusan Volcano in Sorsogon on Tuesday night.
The phreatic eruption occurred at 7:43 p.m. and lasted 77 minutes, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Phivolcs said the volcano remains under Alert Level 1.
In a 24-hour observation report, Phivolcs said the eruption was accompanied by an ash emission that lasted six minutes.
Sixty-six volcanic earthquakes, including six tremors lasting from one to 163 minutes were recorded during the period.
Sulfur dioxide emissions from Bulusan averaged at 548 tons per day as of Tuesday.
Phivolcs said the volcano emitted a voluminous steam-laden plume that rose 70 meters and drifted west-southwest.
Ground deformation data showed that Bulusan’s edifice remains inflated, indicating continued pressure beneath the surface.
Entry into the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone of Bulusan is prohibited.
Holding of any activity within the volcano’s extended danger zone should be coordinated first with authorities.
Pilots have been advised to avoid flying an aircraft close to the volcano.
Phivolcs said sudden steam-driven or phreatic eruptions may still occur despite the low alert level.
