MANILA, Philippines — Police deployed for election duties should be recalled to fight rising crimes, according to Movement for the Restoration of Peace and Order founder Teresita Ang See.

Giving police election-related duties could have resulted in a crime outbreak due to reduced police visibility, Ang See said. She cited the recent kidnapping and killing of Filipino-Chinese businessman Anson Que and his driver Armanie Pabillo.

Ang See expressed alarm over Que’s case and the kidnapping of a 14-year-old Chinese student occurring in a span of five weeks.

The Filipino-Chinese community is not alone in its dissatisfaction with the performance of the Philippine National Police (PNP), she said.

“We are not the only ones saying we’re not satisfied. You can ask any man on the street… it’s so hard to be doing business well when you keep looking behind your back,” she told dzBB.

Ang See has lamented excessive police deployment at election checkpoints.

Candidates in the May midterm polls should hire their own security personnel and not seek police escorts, she said.

“Politicians have the resources for their campaign rallies and security. They should not ask for additional police security. (The PNP) is already stretched too thin at this time and criminals capitalize on that,” Ang See noted.
