Earthquakes rock Ilocos Sur

MANILA, Philippines — Three consecutive earthquakes jolted Ilocos Sur yesterday morning, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

State seismologists said a magnitude 5.3 earthquake rocked the province at 9:09 a.m. yesterday, adding that the epicenter of the temblor was located 99 kilometers north of Santa Catalina town.

The earthquake, they added, was tectonic in origin and with a depth of focus of 24 km.

At about the same time, Phivolcs also recorded a magnitude 4.2 earthquake at 111 km north of Santa Catalina. It was tectonic in origin and with a depth of focus of 10 km.

Another magnitude 4.5 quake rocked the province earlier at 3:04 a.m., with its epicenter located 120 km north of Santa Catalina.

State seismologists said no damage is expected but warned of possible aftershocks.
