MANILA, Philippines — An official of the Quiapo Church said yesterday they are expecting fewer devotees attending masses for the feast of the Black Nazarene on Jan. 9 next year.

Alex Irasga, Quiapo Church technical adviser for the Jesus Nazareno Fiesta 2025, said they are anticipating a lower number of devotees to hear masses at the Quirino Grandstand and at the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene.

“There is a declaration from the Catholic Church that Jan. 9 is the National Feast of the Black Nazarene. This means that all churches in the Philippines would have their own masses,” Irasga said.

The Archdiocese of Manila had petitioned the Vatican to officially recognize Jan. 9 as the annual National Feast of the Black Nazarene.

The annual traslacion or the procession of the 400-year-old image of the Black Nazarene is one of the most anticipated religious activities in the country.

Around six million Catholic devotees joined the procession in January.

Officials of Quiapo Church and the Manila Police District yesterday conducted a walkthrough of the traslacion route to check for road obstructions or repair works that need to be done ahead of the feast of the Black Nazarene.
