Marawi vice mayor nabbed for NBI agent’s slay
MANILA, Philippines — The vice mayor of Marawi City in Lanao del Sur was arrested on Monday in connection with the killing of an operative of the National Bureau of Investigation.
NBI agents backed by the police and military arrested Vice Mayor Anwar Romuros shortly after the flag-raising ceremony at the Marawi City hall.
Romuros’ arrest was based on a warrant issued by the Caloocan Regional Trial Court on charges of murder and attempted murder.
The charges stemmed from the death of NBI agent Latip Sultan during an anti-narcotics operation in Tala, Caloocan in 2013.
Reports said Romuros and his companions fired shots at the NBI operatives, killing Sultan and wounding several others.
NBI Director Jaime Santiago said Romuros has been using the name Anouar Abdulrauf to evade arrest.
The NBI said a manhunt has been launched for the arrest of Romuros’ accomplices.
