MANILA, Philippines — A total of 244 metric tons (MT) or 87 trucks full of garbage were hauled from various parts of Manila in the aftermath of Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name Trami).
Majority of the waste collected by personnel from the city government came from District 5 – Ermita, Malate, Intramuros, Port Area, San Andres Bukid and a portion of Paco – with 25 truckloads or 60 MT.
Huge amounts of trash were also collected from Districts 1 and 2 in Tondo with 20 and 14 truckloads or 56 and 40 MT, respectively.
The following districts also gathered specific volumes of garbage: nine trucks or 30 MT from District 6 or the remaining parts of Paco, Pandacan, San Miguel, Santa Ana and Sta. Mesa; seven trucks or 25 MT from District 3 or Binondo, Quiapo, San Nicolas and Sta. Cruz; and six trucks or 20 MT from District 4 or Sampaloc and other parts of Sta. Mesa.
In addition, the city government’s quick response teams gathered six trucks or 13 MT of trash.
Some trees were knocked down and loads of garbage were washed ashore in Manila Bay as heavy rains and strong winds from Kristine pounded the city.
Meanwhile, the city government said it looked after a total of 1,646 families and seven unattached individuals during the onslaught of Kristine.
Majority of the evacuees, or 821 families, stayed at the Delpan Covered Court in Tondo, while Delpan Evacuation Center took in 97 families and two unattached individuals, Barangay 105 Covered Court took in 220 families and Atienza Elementary School in Baseco Compound took in 164 families.
Reelectionist Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna-Pangan assured the families and individuals who remain at evacuation centers that the city government would continue to give them food and medicines “while they are in our care.”
