EDSA-Kamuning flyover’s southbound lane reopens
MANILA, Philippines — The EDSA-Kamuning flyover’s southbound lane was reopened to motorists yesterday after more than three months of repair.
Acting Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes said the rehabilitation started on May 1 and was supposed to be finished in October.
During the closure, cracked parts of the flyover’s flooring were replaced.
The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) “was able to finish the flyover’s retrofitting works two months ahead of schedule intended to strengthen and prepare it for potential earthquakes, or the ‘Big One,’” Artes said.
During the reopening, MMDA field personnel removed signages instructing motorists to use alternate routes. They also installed plastic barriers separating the innermost lane – reserved for the EDSA Bus Carousel system – from the remaining lanes.
Rehabilitation works would continue, this time “concentrated under the flyover,” DPWH Metro Manila regional director Loreta Malaluan said.
An estimated 24,000 four-wheeled vehicles and 23,000 motorcycles go through the EDSA-Kamuning flyover every day, according to the MMDA.
