MANILA, Philippines — Cavite City has been placed under a state of calamity after a massive fire broke out in two barangays, displacing more than 900 families.

The city council declared a state of calamity based on the recommendation of Mayor Denver Chua and the local disaster risk reduction and management council.

The declaration was based on the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council Memorandum Order 60-2019, which states that if two or more barangays are affected by a disaster, the municipal or city mayor may recommend declaring a state of calamity in the area.

A fire engulfed two barangays in the coastal city on Sunday and left hundreds of families homeless.

The affected residents are taking shelter in two public schools in the area.
