MANILA, Philippines — Over 6,200 erring police officers have been slapped with administrative cases under the administration of President Marcos, the Philippine National Police-Internal Affairs Service (PNP-IAS) said.

Data from the IAS showed that since Marcos assumed office in July 2022, 6,256 PNP members are facing administrative cases ranging from conduct unbecoming of a police officer to grave misconduct.

IAS inspector general Brigido Dulay said the internal cleansing drive has resulted in resolutions recommending sanctions on 2,551 police officers.

“What the President wants is we go after erring police officers,” Dulay said.

Of the number, 572 were recommended for dismissal due to grave offenses such as extortion, involvement in illegal drugs and murder while 260 were recommended for demotion.

Dulay told reporters that the highest-ranked among those penalized is a colonel. Most of the erring personnel are non-commissioned officers, ranging from patrolmen to executive master sergeants.

From January to July 2024, Dulay said 2,591 police officers were charged with administrative cases, 250 of whom were recommended to receive penalties.

Apart from grave misconduct, Dulay said the other offenses committed by the police officers are simple misconduct, simple dishonesty, neglect of duty, gross incompetence and simple irregularity.

As a recommendatory body, all IAS resolutions are subject to approval by the PNP leadership.
