Romina Cabrera - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines — The waters at a popular tourist spot in Palawan has tested positive for red tide, the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) reported yesterday.

It identified Honda Bay in Puerto Princesa as having tested positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) or the toxic red tide.

BFAR said that shellfish collected from the coastal waters of Dauis town and Tagbilaran City in Bohol, Dumanquillas Bay in Zamboanga del Sur and San Benito town in Surigao del Norte all tested positive for PSP.

It warned the public that harvesting, selling, buying and eating of any type of shellfish from these areas are prohibited.

The BFAR added that all types of shellfish and alamang (small shrimp) from these waters are not safe for human consumption.

According to BFAR, the fish, squids and crabs are still safe for eating as long as these are fresh, washed thoroughly and the internal organs removed before cooking.
