MANILA, Philippines — Filipino seafarers can avail themselves of free rides today at the government-subsidized Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) and Light Rail Transit Line 2 (LRT-2), the Department of Transportation said yesterday.

The DOTr said free rides on the MRT-3 would be from 5:30 a.m. until 10 p.m.

The free rides on the LRT-2 will be from 7 to 9 a.m. and from 5 to 7 p.m.

Filipino seafarers need to present their valid identification booklet, record book or identity document to get free rides.

The Maritime Industry Authority partnered with the DOTr for the “libreng sakay” program to mark the Day of the Filipino Seafarer.

Meanwhile, the DOTr is working with the Department of Science and Technology to develop another prototype of the hybrid electric train or HET for adoption in the Philippine National Railways (PNR)’s South Luzon line from Calamba, Laguna to Matnog, Sorsogon.

The DOTr said the Japanese consultants for the PNR’s North-South Commuter Railway project have approved the development of the second prototype of HET.
