ARQ boxer Yeroge Gura vies for WBC Youth belt in Japan today

Will the jinxof ARQ boxers in Japan come to an end?

CEBU, Philippines — The answer to this question is in the hands of Yeroge “The Scientific” Gura as he trades blows with Japanese brawler Ayumu Sano in an exciting battle of unbeaten fighters for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Youth super flyweight belt today (Sunday, June 23) at the Twin Messe in Shizuoka, Japan.

The two protagonists have nearly the same record.

The 21-year-old Gura sports a 8-0-1 slate with 3KOs, while Sano totes a 8-0-1 card with 4KOs.

More than the WBC regional crown, Gura has other business to settle and that is to snap the two-fight skid of his ARQ comrades in Japan.

Before Gura, Johnpaul “Angas ng Cebu” Gabunilas and Rodex “The Tank” Piala tried their luck in the Land of the Rising Sun but both fell short.

Gabunilas lost by a controversial fifth round TKO to Kanamu Sakama on December 26 last year at the Ariake Arena in Tokyo, while Piala absorbed his first career defeat by unanimous decision at the hands of Japanese champion Kenji Fujita in their 12-round duel for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia-Pacific featherweight title three weeks ago at the Korakuen Hall also in Tokyo.

Today, it’s either Gura will break the hex or suffer the same fate as his stablemates. — (FREEMAN)
