COTABATO CITY, Philippines — Two feuding clans in Sulu reconciled on Monday, ending their 50-year conflict.

The leaders of the warring groups, Fhena Idjirani of Parang town and Banden Barahama of Indanan, signed a peace covenant facilitated by police officers in the two towns and the director of the Sulu police, Col. Narciso Paragas.

The two clans reconciled during a symbolic ceremony in Parang.

Tausug elders in Indanan and Parang said the rido of the two groups started in 1974 over political differences and control of territories.

“Credit for this feat should go to provincial and municipal leaders in Sulu and our police personnel there as well as Muslim religious groups and military officials... who convinced both sides to bury the hatchet and live in harmony again,” Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao police director Brig. Gen. Allan Nobleza said.
