La Union set to host int’l surfing competition for the 2nd time
BAGUIO CITY — La Union, dreaming to further prop up its name as the “Surfing Capital of the North” and seeking to mark a dent in the global surfing stage, is hosting the World Surfing League La Union International Pro at the Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan for the second time.
The international surfing competition will be held on Jan. 22 to 28, 2024.
The La Union provincial government led by Governor Raphaelle Veronica Ortega-David said that it is all pumped up to provide assistance and ensure the safety of the participants and spectators during the international surfing event.
"Once again this event will showcase La Union as a global surfing destination. Likewise, this will also help us spur local economic growth and empower local surfers and entrepreneurs alike." Ortega-David beamed.
The sporting event will gather more than a hundred professional surfers from the Asia Pacific Region, hence showcasing world-class surfing.
The event will also stage travel and trade exhibits.
Last year, San Juan hosted the First World Surfing League, while once more featuring its beautiful coastline and incredible waves.
The La Union Provincial Tourism Office (LUPTO) said that it is expecting a 5% increase in the tourist arrivals of the province during the period of the competitions surpassing from 17,976 visitors last year.
It added that the event seeks to further promote La Union as a major surfing destination and an ideal venue for international surfing competitions while showcasing the natural beauty and cultural richness of the province to a global audience.
The WSL La Union International Pro 2024 is organized by the United Philippine Surfing Association as authorized by the World Surf League in collaboration with the PGLU, the Municipality of San Juan, Department of Tourism Region 1, La Union Surf Club and other stakeholders
