Basilan board member shot dead

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — A member of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Basilan was killed in a shooting incident that also left his attacker dead.

Nasser Asarul of District 2 and his companions were in an eatery in front of the Sumisip District Hospital when the suspect, Basid Kari Karim, 45, approached and confronted the board member, Col. Carlos Madronio, Basilan police director, said, citing initial investigation.

Karim reportedly drew his caliber .45 pistol and shot Asarul several times.

Witnesses said the suspect tried to escape, but he was chased and shot by Asarul’s companions.

Asarul was declared dead on arrival at the Lamitan City District Hospital.

Responding policemen recovered bullet shells for a caliber .45 pistol and an M16 rifle.

An investigation is ongoing.
