Manila breaks ground for new high school
MANILA, Philippines — The Manila city government broke ground yesterday for the 10-story Ramon Magsaysay High School (RMHS) in Sampaloc.
The school building will feature state-of-the-art facilities, 232 classrooms, 18 faculty rooms, a library, an auditorium, a gymnasium, outdoor sports area with roof deck, eight elevators and parking spaces.
A total of 6,380 students are currently enrolled at the RMHS, according to school principal Gene Pangilinan.
“The school can only accommodate less than 4,000 students, but it has been exceeded and now has 6,000 because we want to accept more learners,” Pangilinan said.
Manila Mayor Isko Moreno vowed to improve the school’s facilities.
During his speech before the groundbreaking ceremony, Moreno promised to strengthen the skills of public teachers.
The RMHS, which primarily accepts students from Sampaloc district, was built in 1952 as an annex building of the V. Mapa High School.
In 1959, the school was renamed in honor of the late president Ramon Magsaysay.
