PNP-IAS probes killing of Marinduque woodcutter

MANILA, Philippines — The Internal Affairs Service (IAS) of the Philippine National Police (PNP) has started its investigation into the alleged killing of a woodcutter by a policeman in Buenavista, Marinduque last month.

PNP chief Gen. Guillermo Eleazar said the IAS is conducting a pre-charge investigation of Cpl. Jay Anthony Custodio, who was accused of killing Alberto delos Reyes.

Custodio and the town police chief, Lt. Marson Lontoc, were relieved from their posts pending the result of the investigation.

Probers said Custodio shot Delos Reyes during an anti-illegal logging operation, an incident which was witnessed by the victim’s 10-year-old son.

Custodio claimed he shot Delos Reyes in self defense as the victim tried to attack him with a bolo.

The family of Delos Reyes filed a murder complaint against Custodio.

Eleazar assured the family of Delos Reyes that the truth would come out in the investigation.
