MANILA, Philippines — Traffic was almost at a standstill along the South Luzon Expressway yesterday after authorities tightened security at checkpoints along the SLEX, an official said yesterday.
“All cars were intercepted and those inside were being asked if they were authorized to pass through. We also looked at their social distancing,” said Lt. Gen. Guillermo Eleazar, commander of the Joint Task Force Coronavirus Shield, referring to the number of occupants in a vehicle.
He warned that motorists who violate the travel ban, enforced under the enhanced community quarantine, would receive traffic tickets.
Heavy traffic was also reported along the National Road in Muntinlupa as well as some parts of Las Piñas and Parañaque.
On Monday, Metropolitan Manila Development Authority traffic czar Bong Nebrija also noted heavy traffic along EDSA, saying the sudden increase in the number of vehicles meant there were motorists who did not follow quarantine rules.
