MANILA, Philippines — There is no concrete evidence to prove the existence of a vigilante group alleged to be behind a wave of killings in Negros Oriental, Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Gen. Oscar Albayalde said yesterday.
Albayalde said probers have not established that there is a so-called Kawssa Guilhungan Bato Komunista or Kagubak.
Albayalde had earlier ordered the Central Visayas police to look into reports that Kagubak, an alleged anti-communist hit squad, is behind the killing of those they perceived as supporters of communist rebels.
He said the supposed existence of the vigilante group could have been made up to put the government in bad light.
Senators Ronald dela Rosa and Risa Hontiveros said the group came out with a hit list of those with alleged links to the communist movement.
At least 21 people were killed in Negros Oriental from July 18 to 28. Among the fatalities are a lawyer, barangay officials and police officers.
