LANAO DEL NORTE, Philippines — Inmates at the Lanao del Norte Provincial Jail recently completed their studies, which they undertook while serving time for various offenses, according to the Department of Education (DepEd).
Of the 55 inmates who studied through the Alternative Learning System (ALS), 24 graduated in the elementary and 31 completed secondary education, including four female inmates, according to DepEd School Division Superintendent Roy Angelo Gazo.
The education department, in coordination with the provincial government and Bureau of Jail Management and Penology implemented the ALS program, which was meant to provide out-of-school children, youths and adults with basic education.
The provincial officials urged the inmates to improve their lives, once they return to their communities.
