ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines — Two combat units of the Philippine Marines were activated yesterday to fight terrorism and kidnapping in Mindanao.

Maj. Gen. Alvin Parreño, Marine Corps commandant, led the activation of the 84th Inshore Boat and 85th Maintenance Companies in ceremonies held at the Western Mindanao Command (Westmincom).

Parreño said additional forces would complement Army and naval forces deployed along the coastlines of Zamboanga, Basilan, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi that are being used by Abu Sayyaf bandits and other criminal gangs.

He said the new units are provided with high-speed seacraft and land support equipment system to track down criminals and terrorists.

“The activation of the new units is helpful in securing this part of the region because they will add up to security in our coastlines,” Parreño said.

He said 16 speedboats and eight amphibious assault vehicles among other equipment are also set for delivery next year to the Marines’ Combat Service Support Brigade (CSSB).

Meanwhile, Col. Jesus Caldez was named new commander of the CSSB. He replaced Brig. Gen. Ariel Caculitan, who was designated  deputy commandant of the Marine Corps.
