MANILA, Philippines — A total of 488 people were rounded up by police in Quezon City for violating ordinances over the weekend.
Of the number, 124 were caught smoking in public places and 213 were nabbed for jaywalking. The rest violated city ordinances and other laws.
Authorities said the operations were meant to rid the streets of tambays or loiterers.
Police also arrested 29 drug suspects in separate stings in Barangays San Agustin, San Bartolome, Gulod, Pansol, Bagong Pag-asa, Unang Sigaw, Payatas, Matandang Balara, Doña Imelda, Central and Bagumbayan.
In eastern Metro Manila, a couple and two others were collared in anti-narcotics operations.
Aquilis Borre, alias Ombot, 41, his wife Margie, 30, and cousin Ranie Colipano, 40, were apprehended in a sting in Barangay Tumana in Marikina.
City police chief Senior Superintendent Roger Quesada said the suspects yielded six sachets of shabu and P500 in marked money.
In Pasig City, suspected drug pusher Ryan Vega was nabbed when police raided his house along Sandoval Avenue in Barangay Pinagbuhatan.
Police said they recovered 16 sachets of shabu from Vega. – Romina Cabrera
