MANILA, Philippines — President Duterte wants the training of cadets under the Philippine National Police Academy (PNPA) to be handled by the Philippine National Police.
PNP chief Director General Oscar Albayalde said yesterday Duterte has expressed support for their proposal to have the training of the PNPA cadets under their jurisdiction from the Philippine Public Safety College (PPSC).
In an interview over “Agenda,” a program over One News on Cignal TV, Albayalde said the President instructed Antipolo City 2nd District Rep. Romeo Acop, a former police official, to support the PNP’s initiative.
“In our last Cabinet meeting, he (Duterte) gave instruction to Rep. Acop to support our proposal,” said Albayalde.
The PNP has been pushing for an amendment of Republic Act 6975 or the Department of the Interior and Local Government Act (DILG) of 1990, which provides for the PPSC to train police cadets.
Albayalde said they want a similar situation to that of the Philippine Military Academy which has jurisdiction over cadets who want to join the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
“It’s under the law so we really have to amend the law,” Albayalde said.
The PNP wants to have jurisdiction so it could screen cadet applicants with potential to commit illegal activities who want to join the organization.
National Police Commission vice chairman Rogelio Casurao recently said 754 police officers and personnel were dismissed from the service for various offenses since last year.
