MANILA, Philippines - A 30-year-old man allegedly responsible for the killing of two persons died in what police said was a shootout in Tondo, Manila at dawn yesterday.
Renato Santiago, said to be a member of the Sputnik Gang, was slain after he allegedly opened fire at police officers who were about to arrest him at past 12:30 a.m.
Police Officer 3 Roderick Magpale of the Manila Police District homicide unit said a team was dispatched to apprehend Santiago after he allegedly killed Ronald Ramos.
Magpale said Santiago was also tagged in the killing of Jonel Flaviano at the corner of Capulong and Velasquez streets in Tondo on Dec. 30.
The lawmen were about to approach Santiago when he opened fire, prompting them to return fire.
Santiago died at the scene from gunshots to the body.
