MANILA, Philippines – One person was killed while six others were injured after a Philippine National Railways train hit a speeding passenger jeepney at the crossing of Paco Station, Manila on Tuesday evening.
Reports said the jeep with plate number PCV-165 hit the train after its driver tried to beat the railroad crossing barrier despite the incoming train. The accident occurred past 6 p.m. at the corner of Pedro Gil and Quirino streets.
A total of seven passengers were initially injured, attended by concerned citizens and later on brought to the Sta. Ana Hospital by the rescuers. However, one of the seven injured died after obtaining severe head injury.
The fatality, still unnamed, was described as a 50-year-old teacher.
The crash destroyed the jeep’s windshield and struck another delivery van.
Aside from the damage, the collision caused traffic in Pedro Gil and Quirino streets.
The PNR management said the accident could have been avoided if the motorists and commuters follow the “stop, look and listen” rule when a train is approaching. - Rosette Adel
