Kanlaon Volcano spews steam anew

Ghio Ong, Helen Flores - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines – Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island spewed steam yesterday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.

State seismologists observed a moderate emission of white steam plumes in the past 24 hours that rose 50 meters above the summit.

Phivolcs said three volcanic earthquakes were recorded around the volcano.

Alert level 1 remains hoisted over Kanlaon, which means that the volcano is showing abnormal activity.

The public was prevented from entering the four-kilometer-radius permanent danger zone due to possibilities of sudden and hazardous steam-driven or phreatic eruptions.

An estimated 11,000 individuals are residing within the permanent danger zone in the villages of Malusog, Malaiba, Pula and Linothangan.

Pilots have been advised to observe caution when flying near the volcano since it first showed restiveness last week.

Aside from Kanlaon, other volcanoes currently under alert level 1 are Bulusan in Sorsogon, Mayon in Albay and Taal in Batangas.
