MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said there is no tsunami threat in the country following the magnitude-7 earthquake that hit Japan yesterday morning.
“No destructive Pacific-wide threat exists based on available data,” state seismologists said in an advisory.
The quake occurred northwest of Ryukyu Islands at 4:51 a.m. (Philippine time).
No damage or casualty was reported in the quake, according to Japan Times.
In 2011, a magnitude-12 earthquake generated a tsunami in northeastern Japan, killing thousands and sending reactors of a nuclear power plant into a meltdown.
