EU donates to Lando victims

The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - The European Commission (EC) has donated 124,394 euros for victims of Typhoon Lando.

The humanitarian aid will benefit 2,500 families or around 12,500 people with food and non-food relief items including medicine and emergency shelter materials such as tarpaulins, blankets and sleeping mats, water containers and mosquito nets.

The donation is part of the European Union (EU)‘s contribution to the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.

Lando displaced over 1.4 million people, including over 100,000 who were evacuated from their homes.

The EU is the world’s leading donor of humanitarian aid. The EC, through its humanitarian aid and civil protection department, helps over 120 million victims of conflicts and disasters every year.

Social Welfare Secretary Corazon Soliman said 5,805 families or 25,443 persons remained in evacuation centers as of Thursday.

The teams that conducted a damage assessment and needs analysis recommended the continuous delivery of food and non-food items to typhoon victims.

They also recommended the delivery of repair kits for damaged houses, repair of school buildings and furniture, replacement of damaged books and school supplies, and cleanup drives in flooded areas through food-for-work or cash-for-work programs. – Pia Lee-Brago, Rainier Allan Ronda
