DOH: Rabies has killed 162 this year

Mayen Jaymalin - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Close to 200 people nationwide have died from rabies this year, the Department of Health (DOH) reported yesterday.

Data from DOH’s public health surveillance division showed that 162 people died due to rabies from January to August.

The health department said the figure was lower by 21 percent compared to the same period last year.

Central Luzon accounted for the largest number of rabies deaths with 23, followed by Bicol with 20 and the Ilocos Region with 19.

The agency said nine regions posted a sharp decline in the number of rabies deaths.

It said rabies kills an average of 300 to 400 people annually. Dog bites accounted for a majority of the cases.

The DOH has been promoting mass immunization of pet dogs to prevent the spread of the disease.

The DOH observed World Rabies Day yesterday to raise awareness, particularly in high-risk communities.

Meanwhile, health officials are urging parents to ensure that their children’s vaccines are complete to avoid getting sick.

The DOH is implementing routine immunization program against tuberculosis, hepatitis B, diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus, pneumonia, polio, meningitis, measles and mumps.

Free vaccines are available in local health centers.
