MANILA, Philippines - More than a week after Typhoon Ineng left the country, thousands are still staying in evacuation centers.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) yesterday reported 11,915 persons or 2,966 families remain in government-designated evacuation centers.
NDRRMC spokesman Mina Marasigan said thousands were displaced because many houses were damaged due to landslides and flooding.
Marasigan said the government is providing assistance to displaced families, including counseling to those who lost their homes.
“The next step is the request for calamity funds for temporary shelters,” she said.
The NDRRMC said Ineng damaged 5,742 houses in the Ilocos Region, Cagayan, Central Luzon, Calabarzon and the Cordilleras.
Damage to agriculture and infrastructure was placed at more than P2 billion.
The death toll has risen to 29, with 24 injured and 11 missing.
