Lawmaker inaugurates sports project at Leyte school
ORMOC CITY, Philippines – Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez led the inauguration of a sports facility at the Ormoc City Central School here last Sunday.
The facility, a rubberized oval, was funded by Gomez’s Priority Development Assistance Fund during her first term in office.
The event was attended by city Councilors Vincent Rama, Ernesto Barquio and Gerardo Penserga; Ronelo Firmo, head of Leyte regional education department; Ormoc City school division superintendent Mariza Magan and Lino Gonzales, chief of the engineering division.
Gonzales said Gomez made sure that the funds would be spent on the project. Instead of contracting out the oval’s rubberized overlay, the lawmaker opted to bring in suppliers from China to work on the project.
He said while the project’s Phase 1 and 2 were completed within the 240-day time frame, rains hampered the installation of the rubber overlay.
Just when they were ready for the overlay in November last year, Gonzales said Super Typhoon Yolanda devastated the region.
He said they opted not to install brighter lights, as these are hard and costly to maintain.
Gomez said the oval is one of her seven “legacy projects” for her district. She said the project was an idea of her husband, actor and athlete Richard Gomez.
