Ramil Bajo - The Philippine Star

KORONADAL CITY, Philippines  â€“ The municipal council of Tupi in South Cotabato yesterday placed the entire town under a state of calamity in order to bring immediate assistance to villages hit by floods and a tornado last week.

Tupi Mayor Reynaldo Tamayo confirmed that the municipal council unanimously voted to declare the town under a state of calamity.

The floods and tornado reportedly caused P1 million worth of damage to the town’s agricultural crops such as papaya, corn, palay, pineapple, flowers and asparagus.

At least 50 houses were flattened when a tornado hit the village of Kablon.

Tamayo said, aside from the tornado, several villages were also hit by flash floods due to heavy rains that occurred every afternoon.

The town of Tupi is also known as the flower and asparagus capital of South Cotabato.
