Magnitude 5.3 quake hits northern Luzon

A map from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology shows the epicenter of the magnitude 5.3 quake that jolted Northern Luzon.

MANILA, Philippines - A magnitude 5.3 earthquake jolted Ilocos Norte at around 1:55 p.m. on Monday and will be followed by a few aftershocks, the state volcanology agency said.

The tectonic quake with a depth of 25 kilometers was recorded at 29 kilometers south and 87 west of Burgos, Ilocos Norte, affecting Pasuquin town with intensity 5 tremors, PHIVOLCS said in an advisory.

Sarrat, Laoag and Paoay also experienced Intensity 4 shakes, while Intensity 3 tremors were felt in Sinait, Ilocos Sur.

Intensity 2 seisms were recorded in Ilocos Sur's Santa town, and Cagayan areas of Callao, Peñablanca and Calayan.

Baguo City, meanwhile, barely felt Intensity 1 resulting tremors from the said disturbance.

No injuries were reported.

The United States Geological Survey noted in an advisory, however, that the same quake is at magnitude 5.8.
