Firecracker injuries in Cordillera rise to 30
BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – The number of firecracker-related injuries increased further to 30 in the highland Cordillera region.
Based on data from the regional health office, majority of the injuries were recorded in Baguio City, where there is an absolute ban on the distribution and use of firecrackers including pyrotechnic devices.
Dr. Elnoria Bugnosen of the health department reported that 12 firecracker-related injuries were recorded in Baguio City; three in Benguet ((one each in Bakun, Mankayan and Itogon towns); eight in Abra (Bangued, 3; Tayum, 3; La Paz,1’ Bucay,1); two in Mt. Province (one each in Bontoc and Sagada); four in Ifugao (2 in Hingyon, an one each in Lagawe and Lamut); and one in Pudtol, Apayao province.
Bugnosen said that the figure is bigger compared to last year's number of firecracker-related injuries. She, however, mentioned that last year's cases were more severe compared to those recorded this year.
Two of this year's victims lost their fingers and got facial scars.
Piccolo remained the most dangerous firecracker in the region with 18 cases followed by kwitis (4), plapla (2) and improvised pyrotechnic material (2).
The Baguio City Police, meanwhile, said that it seized P40,000.00 worth of firecrackers.
Superintendent Andrew Cayad, spokesperson of the city police, reported that one person was arrested for violating Republic Act 7183 which regulates the "sale, manufacture, distribution and use of firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices."
