MANILA, Philippines - Leyte Rep. Lucy Torres-Gomez has called on Filipinos to support Naderev Saño, Philippine climate change commissioner, who went on a fast to force developed economies to commit funds and technology for anti-global warming programs.
Torres-Gomez, whose district was among those devastated by Typhoon Yolanda, said such tragedies should not become “a way of life for us Filipinos.â€
She said most countries of the world, “obsessed with myopic economic interests, have long chosen to ignore the looming problem of climate change.â€
She cited comments from analysts that no major decisions are expected from the United Nations climate change conference in Warsaw, Poland.
She said while she wants to be optimistic about a deal being hammered out, she noted the final agreement on the matter is not expected to be concluded until 2015 in Paris, and will not come into force until 2020.
