MMDA helps in cleaning public cemeteries

MANILA, Philippines - The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority has deployed cleanup teams to various public cemeteries in Metro Manila in preparation for All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day.

MMDA chairman Francis  Tolentino said on Wednesday that the personnel will assist the local government units in garbage collection, sweeping, and repainting of public cemeteries as part of “Oplan Kaluluwa 2013” contingency plan being firmed up by the agency.

"We have about 10 days to clean up the cemeteries. Our objective here is to spruce up most of these 22 public cemeteries, clear the sidewalks, and remove obstructions and illegal structures within the immediate vicinities," Tolentino said.

The cleanup activity will be carried out in coordination with the LGus concerned, he added.

Some of the public cemeteries to be cleaned up are Makati South Cemetery, San Felipe Roman Catholic Cemetery in Mandaluyong, Manila North and La Loma cemeteries in Caloocan City; and Bagbag and Sangandaan cemeteries in Quezon City.

A traffic management plan in coordination with various LGU traffic bureaus is also being finalized.
