MANILA, Philippines - For fear of their lives, nearly 700 teachers in Maguindanao refuse to do their poll duty in the upcoming barangay elections on October 28.
State-run news site, Philippine News Agency, reported that the tutors from six towns of Maguindanao sent a letter to the Commission on Elections poll supervisor Udtog Tago, where they expressed their intention to decline their duties as Board of Election Tellers for security reasons.
The teachers from towns of Datu Saudi Ampatuan, Salipada K. Pendatun, Shariff Aguak, Saidona Mustapha, Datu Piang and Datu Abdullah Sangki do not want to be targets by losing candidates during previous elections, the communiqué to the poll official said.
"The BETs form part of the board of canvassers in the barangay level that is why the teachers fear for their lives as they are exposed to threats and violence during election time," Tago said.
Tago said he has forwarded the communiqué to the Comelec en banc in Manila for proper perusal and disposition.
He added that they might coordinate with and tap the local policemen to serve as BETs for the six towns instead if the concern of the teachers is not addressed.
Meanwhile, the poll official said he will reshuffle Comelec personnel between Maguindanao and Lanao del Sur provinces to prevent any "familiarization" of poll workers with candidates.
