MANILA, Philippines - Residents in the cities of Bacoor and Kawit in Cavite have asked the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System (MWSS) to implement a bigger reduction in water rates, saying the monthly 20 cubic meter reduction is too small.
Sen. Antonio Trillanes though lauded the MWSS on its announcement to cut water rates starting next month.
“This action of the MWSS is a victory for the residents of Metro Manila who have been quietly taking on the burden of having high water rates all these years,†said Trillanes, adding that the reduction will be the first in 16 years.
Water Watch Coalition president Jun Gatmaitan said the approved water rate reduction is a victory in itself for water consumers. However, he urged consumers to remain vigilant.
The MWSS said the new rates will take effect 15 days after publication in major broadsheets.
But barangay official Alyn Gabilo, of Paliparan, Bacoor, Cavite, said the reduction in water rates ordered by MWSS to Maynilad and Manila Water is too small.
