MANILA, Philippines - Over 200 urban poor families on R-10, Tondo, Manila are now bracing to repel the possible demolition Monday of their houses, urban poor group Kadamay said.
The group said the residents of the area have gathered at the corner of R-10 and Moriones Street toset up a barricade, keep at bay the demolition crew from the Department of Public Works and Highways.
The Notice of Demolition issued by the DPWH to informal settlers in the area had lapsed last Aug. 31.
Kadamay said the 207 families are ready to defend their homes against the demolition to pave the way for road widening project and truck parking in their community.
The residents have held a vigil since Sunday night and held a program near the intersection as early as 5 a.m. today.
