MANILA, Philippines - Government troops and suspected members of the Abu Sayyaf Group clashed in Basilan on Thursday, killing a soldier and seven bandits, a military official said.
Col. Carlito Galvez, 104th Infantry Brigade commander, said soldiers were patrolling at Sitio Bohe Libi, Macalang, Al-barka, Basilan around 4 a.m. when they encountered a group of gunmen.
Galvez said he dispatched troops in the area after reports that bandits were planning to bomb military installations in Isabela and Zamboanga.
After the firefight, which ended around 10 a.m., a soldier was killed while three other troops were wounded.
The military is still verifying reports that seven ASG men, reportedly led by Isnilon Hapilon and Furuji Indama, were wounded during the clash.
The military has already launched pursuit operations against the gunmen.
