MANILA, Philippines - A Filipino nurse in Memphis was shot dead earlier this week, the Philippine Embassy in the United States said on Friday.

The victim was identified as Erano Santos, 33, who hails from Angeles City, Pampanga and was killed outside his apartment in Memphis.

The Embassy said it was told by the Memphis police that the death of Santos is still under investigation.

A report posted on ABCNews Radio Online said the incident happened at the Stonebridge Crossing Apartments on Morning Trace Drive.

"Witnesses told investigators that Santos was shot during a physical altercation in the complex parking lot, and that his vehicle was taken," the report said.

At the crime scene, Santos was found with an apparent gunshot wound to the body, the report added.

Santos was also pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report, and that there were no immediate arrests following the incident.

The Embassy said that coordination is being made with the Memphis Police in connection with the incident.

It added that assistance is also being extended to the victim's family.
