MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) yesterday said 1,660 kilos of contaminated materials have been collected from the oil spill site in Barangay Ipag in Mariveles, Bataan.

Three days after the incident, the PCG said it is shifting operations from “active oil spill response” to monitoring, after no visible oil sheen was seen on the water’s surface.

“The PCG response team and the municipal disaster risk reduction and mangement office of Mariveles conducted a joint inspection of the waters in the affected area and found no visible oil sheen,” a statement declared.

At least 83 sacks of the collected debris have been sent to a transfer station. This will be turned over to an accredited oily waste collector for proper disposal.

Oil spill containment and recovery operations along the coastal waters of Barangay Ipag were conducted since Nov. 6.

The PCG also deployed oil spill booms after 25 liters of used oil were spilled into the sea on Nov. 5.
