LTFRB considering phase-out of old jeepneys

Camille Diola - The Philippine Star

MANILA, Philippines - Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Winston Ginez said Thursday that the agency is looking into imposing an age limit for public utility jeepneys.

Ginez said in a television interview that the policy to phase out rusty and old jeepneys may contribute to the security of passengers.

Former LTFRB chair Elena Baustista also proposed to terminate the operations of old jeepneys in 2004, but it did not push through.

While he believes the move will be welcome to private motorists and commuters, Ginez said he also expects opposition by transport groups.

Earlier this year, the Court of Appeals upheld the LTFRB's order to phase out 13-year-old and older taxi units.

Buses are also not allowed to operate if the vehicles are more than 15 years of age.
