Village chief's wife slain in grenade attack in Basilan

ZAMBOANGA City, Philippines - A woman was killed and another was wounded in a grenade explosion Wednesday dawn in Lamitan City, Basilan province.

Police identified the fatality as Sapiya Mansul, wife of barangay captain Gais Mansul of Sibago Island off Mohammad Ajul town, Basilan province. The wounded victim was identified as Sonia delos Santos.

Senior Inspector Almer Ismael, city police chief, said that Mansul and her husband were asleep when an unidentified man lobbed an MK2 fragmentation grenade into their rented room in Sitio Ovel, Barangay Matibay.

Mansul died on the spot while Delos Santos, who is also an occupant at the house, was wounded.

Police said that the possible target of the attack was the barangay captain.
