PNP official to appeal conviction on drug charges

Raymund Catindig - The Philippine Star

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Philippines – Superintendent Dionisio Borromeo is set to file an appeal in a bid to reverse his conviction for allegedly protecting a major drug laboratory in Naguilian, La Union in 2008.

Borromeo was temporarily detained yesterday at the La Union Provincial Jail in San Fernando City, pending the issuance by Judge Ferdinand Fe of a commitment order to the New Bilibid Prison.

Lawyer Raul Po said his client was transported to San Fernando City from his former post at the Cavite Provincial Police Office in Imus City were he was last assigned as deputy director for administration.

Borromeo’s co-accused, Senior Police Officer 1 Joey Abang, remains at the Bauang District Jail pending the issuance of the same commitment order.

Borromeo’s town mates in Ilagan City, Isabela were surprised by his conviction.

John Reniedo said he knew Borromeo as a soft-spoken man who does not impose himself on others.

“He would invite town mates to visit him in Manila during stint as intelligence chief at Caloocan City police,” Reniedo said.

“I know he will face the charges, he will not evade his conviction,” said Senior Superintendent Ricardo Espiritu, former colleague of Borromeo at the Traffic Management Group.
