For lack of college funds, teen kills self

Charlie Lagasca, Teddy Molina - The Philippine Star

SAN NICOLAS, Ilocos Norte, Philippines – A 15-year-old boy whose parents could not afford to send him to college committed suicide here yesterday.

Reports said Denmark Gabug of Barangay San Lorenzo took his life by tying a nylon cord around his neck. He graduated from high school last April.

He was reportedly desperate that he would not be able to enroll for college this school year due to lack of funds.

Gabug’s mother Cynthia said she did not expect her son to end his life, as they were still hoping that they would be able to raise money for his college enrollment before classes start.

Last March, Kristel Tejada, 16, a University of the Philippines (UP) Behavioral Science freshman, ended her life for lack of money to pay her tuition at the state university.

Her death sparked protests from UP students, teachers, and the public for the state university’s strict policy on tuition payments.
