Ex-Agusan lawmaker dies at 79
BUTUAN CITY, Philippines – Former Agusan del Norte congressman and executive secretary Edelmiro Amante Sr. died at his residence in Cabadbaran City at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. He would have turned 80 on April 21.
Butuan City Mayor Ferdinand Magdamo Amante Jr. yesterday confirmed the death of his uncle, who was diagnosed with liver cancer.
“Mano Edil,†as Amante was fondly called, first entered politics as a “barangay lieutenant†in Butuan City in 1959.
He was Butuan City councilor from 1960 to 1964 and assemblyman of the Batasang Pambansa representing Agusan del Norte’s second district from 1978 to 1984.
He was elected four times to the House of Representatives and represented the second district of Agusan del Norte starting in 1986.
Amante was the first president of Lakas-Tao political party, which he helped form in 1991, and carried the candidacy of former President Fidel Ramos in the 1992 elections.
He was executive secretary from Sept. 14, 1992 until June 23, 1993.
Amante is survived by his wife, former Cabadbaran mayor Rosario Amante; daughter, Rep. Maria Angelica Rossdell Amante-Matba of the second district of Agusan del Norte; and Agusan del Norte Gov. Erlpe John Amante.
