MANILA, Philippines - A 6.2 magnitude earthquake hit parts of Mindanao at past noon yesterday, triggering panic but there was no immediate report of damage or casualty.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the tremor was felt at Intensity 4 in Mati and Taragona in Davao Oriental, Intensity 3 in Davao City and Intensity 2 in General Santos City, Butuan City and Malaybalay, Bukidnon.

Residents said people rushed out of buildings in panic after the quake sent lighting fixtures swaying.

The quake struck at 12:37 p.m.  about 30 kilometers northeast of the town of Sarangani, state seismologists said. It was said to be tectonic in origin.

Phivolcs said they are expecting aftershocks due to the quake.

A 3.9 magnitude quake also shook parts of Surigao del Sur yesterday afternoon, Phivolcs said.

The quake was felt at Intensity 3 in Hinatuan and Bislig City. It occurred before 2 p.m. and the epicenter was 58 kms northeast of Hinatuan town.

The Philippines lies on the Pacific Ring of Fire, where continental plates collide, causing frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.  – With Edith Regalado
