More than 11k displaced in Caraga floods

More than 11,000 persons in the Caraga region have been displaced due to floods caused by the tail end of a cold front.

In a report, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) Caraga said a total of 11,148 residents have been evacuated to 28 temporary shelters.

Majority of the evacuees, 10,360 of them, were from Surigao del Sur while the rest were from Butuan City. The displaced persons stay inside barangay halls, schools, gyms, covered courts and churches until the weather improves.

A total of 16,598 persons in the region have been affected by the bad weather. Affected persons include evacuees, those living in flooded areas and those who lost properties.

The floods have affected the towns of Alegria, Bacuag, Claver, Gigaquit, Mainit, Tubod, and Butuan in Surigao del Norte and Butuan City.

OCD-Caraga said some evacuees in Mainit, Surigao del Norte and Butuan have returned home after flood levels in these areas have subsided.

The regional disaster management council is continuously monitoring the situation in the affected areas.
